The Kitchen @ Foster (Design)

Stage 1 – Design

– The Brief

We were asked to redesign and modernise the refectory in the Foster building at UCLan. Our client wanted us to focus on the fact that they sourced healthy food from local farmers and suppliers. This with the fact that they wanted to radically update the space to make it more appealing and useful for both students and lecturers.

– Our Approach

The brief led us to design an ecological, healthy eating cafe with all the amenities of an office. We looked at hybrid cafe/office spaces which had interiors designed specifically for todays mobile worker. They had things like lamps and power points connected to the sides of tables as well as comfortable armchairs for casual meetings – all this would appeal to students and lecturers as they are mobile workers too. We broke the space down into three main areas – there is a lounge area, a main eating area and a quiet, study, eat area. We also redesigned the layout of the shop at the front of the refectory (Stop “n” Shop) to increase customer flow to pass through it to get to the refectory and vice versa.

– Health and Eco Aspect

The colour scheme, all the wall graphics, the signage and the use of natural materials were all chosen to encourage and promote healthy eating and inform students and lecturers that their food was sourced from local farmers. Where furniture could be reused we suggested ways it could be regenerated or reupholstered to give it a new lease of life. We also sourced eco products such as Rock ‘n’ Roll Wild Thing striped wool carpet from Alternative Flooring to go in the lounge area and FEEL – THRU natural felt room divider by ABR Production to separate the quiet, study, eat area from the rest of the cafe. We also suggested having wall stickers around the sockets and light switches to remind students to switch them off after use and energy saving light bulbs in all the light fittings to help save energy.
